Game Review & Description: Imagine the scenario: You place your copy of Micro Machines V3 into your PlayStation and for some reason, there are no vehicles to race in. They may have been impounded, or maybe just failed their MOT, but the Micro Machines are gone, nowhere to be seen. What would you do? Take Shanks pony or create a new game from whats left? Well, Codemasters have taken the former option, asking us to leave the car at home, and take the Micro Maniacs for a spin. Theres no lead in these characters boots. Despite the cosmetic similarities between Micro Maniacs and Micro Machines V3, this newer game is by no means a sequel. Try to play Micro Maniacs in the same fashion as Micro Machines and youll soon come unstuck. The titular maniacs are an odd and not a little macabre looking bunch of index finger-sized weirdos who get their kicks by racing around your house and its surroundings. They get everywhere, from the workbench in the garden shed to the dinner table. If youre agile enough, and manage to get to them before your opponents, you can hitch a ride on a skateboard or a jet-ski. The maniacs themselves can acquire a number of different weapons whilst on their travels, such as fireballs, and the deliciously wicked black holes, where, if you get sucked in, you simply dont get out. A neat twist on the micro racer genre, Micro Maniacs has instant appeal simply because its different. The gameplay is fast and fun, theres enough of a challenge to keep your interest for a long while, especially in multi-player mode, and the tracks are imaginatively designed and plentiful. Micro Maniacs gets a thumb-sized thumbs up.
